Cinque Terre Day Trip from Florence or Pisa in Winter: Trains, Tours and a Realistic Plan

Winter is the quiet season in the Cinque Terre. There are no queues on the platforms and no crowds in Vernazza, so you can walk the lanes at your own pace. The catch is that the days are short, a lot of businesses close and the trains run less often. Here are the real train patterns, the fares and four timed day plans, so you can decide whether a day trip from Florence or Pisa suits you.

A winter day in the Cinque Terre from Tuscany works best from Pisa, which is about an hour from La Spezia by train. From Florence it is a long day but a perfectly doable one, as long as you plan it around the trains and the early sunset. Most of what changes between November and March comes down to three things: about nine hours of daylight in December, fewer trains and almost no boats, and village restaurants that close for part of the season.

Quick answer: yes, a winter day trip works, especially from Pisa (about 1 hour each way). From Florence it's a long day: about 2h20 to 2h30 each way by regional train. Pick three villages, catch a train leaving Florence by about 7:00, and plan to start back from La Spezia by about 17:40. If you want to see the Manarola nativity on the night it's switched on (expected 8 December), stay overnight.

Rather not deal with the trains? The Florence: Cinque Terre Day Trip with Optional Hiking or Pisa (from $63 · 4.9★ from 6,371 reviews) runs through the winter with the coach and the village trains handled, and you choose a hike or a stop in Pisa when you book. Pick a date in the calendar above; free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Is a winter day trip worth it?

Yes, as long as you go in with realistic expectations. Here's what changes between November and March.

Daylight is the real limit

Sunrise and sunset in La Spezia (figures vary by a minute or two between sources):

25 Dec07:5616:49

From February, sunset moves past 17:30, and by March the days are much longer. In December you get about 9 hours of daylight, so do your walking and photos before about 16:30.

Fewer trains, (almost) no boats

  • The regular Cinque Terre ferry stops on 1 November 2026. According to the operator, Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti, the Cinque Terre Trip boat from La Spezia and Porto Venere to Vernazza and Monterosso runs every day from 2 November to 8 December 2026, then stops until March.
  • The extra Cinque Terre Express trains also stop after 1 November. Ordinary regional trains still call at all five villages roughly once or twice an hour.

Our guide to getting around the Cinque Terre without the ferry has the full picture.

Closed restaurants, empty lanes

Many restaurants and shops close for part of the winter, especially in January. Monterosso and Riomaggiore usually have the most places open, and our village-by-village guide to what's open covers the details. The upside is that you'll have the harbours and viewpoints almost to yourself.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip from Florence gives you about 5 to 6 hours on the ground. One night in La Spezia or a village roughly doubles that, takes the pressure off the last train and lets you see the nativity lights without rushing. If you can spare a night, stay over: our guide to where to stay in the Cinque Terre in winter compares the villages and La Spezia. Still undecided about the season? Other experiences you might enjoy

A winter day on the coast usually starts in Florence or Pisa. Guided Cinque Terre day trips from Florence still reach Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso by coach and train, and many add a stop at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If you have a spare day, La Spezia, Porto Venere and Lucca keep walking tours, wine tastings and cooking classes going through the winter.

DIY by train from Florence

All Cinque Terre trains from Florence go through La Spezia Centrale. You have three options:

  • Direct regional train (Regionale): roughly hourly from Florence SMN. It takes about 2h27 and stops at Pisa Centrale on the way.
  • Regional Veloce to Pisa, then change: often about 2h20 in total. Departures on the hour and half hour are typical.
  • Intercity or Freccia: a few faster services (from about 1h30, some from Firenze Campo di Marte) or an Intercity leg from Pisa. These have reserved seats and dynamic prices, so they're cheaper if you book ahead.

Typical pattern (October 2026 listings): a 07:00 departure from SMN reaches La Spezia at 09:33. The earliest trains leave around 6:00. Direct regional trains back to Florence leave La Spezia at about 16:40, 17:40 and 18:40 (arriving 19:08, 20:08 and 21:08). On weekdays there's also a 19:16 (arriving 21:57). On Sundays and holidays the last direct train is the 18:40.

Fares: regional fares are fixed. Expect about €15 to €16 one way whether you buy today or a month ahead, and regional trains can't sell out. Intercity fares go up as the date gets closer.

Check before you go: Trenitalia's new timetable starts on 13 December 2026, and the times above come from the 2025/26 timetable. Look up your exact date in the Trenitalia app.

Buying tickets: app, machine and validation

  • Trenitalia app or website: a digital regional ticket is tied to the train you choose and activates automatically at that train's scheduled departure. If you miss it, change the ticket in the app before you board another train.
  • Station machines: paper regional tickets must be validated in the small machines on the platform or in the hall before you board. Once validated, they're valid for 4 hours.
  • Fines: under Trenitalia's rules, as summarised by the Italian legal site La Legge per Tutti, a missing or incorrect validation costs €200, cut to €100 if you pay within 15 days. Conductors in Liguria do check.

Our trains and Cinque Terre Card guide covers the line in more detail.

DIY by train from Pisa

Pisa is the easy base. Trains from Pisa Centrale to La Spezia Centrale run about twice an hour. Regional trains take 1h10 to 1h25 and cost about €8. Intercity and Frecciabianca trains take about 50 minutes and cost more.

From Pisa Airport: take the automated Pisa Mover to Pisa Centrale. The ride takes about 5 minutes and the service runs from about 06:00 to midnight, less often between late October and mid-December. Trenitalia's official Pisa Airport page gives the single fare as €6.50, though older guides quote less, so check before you fly. If you land around midday, the day is too short for the Cinque Terre. Go the next morning instead.

Is there a guided tour from Pisa? Not on GetYourGuide: its Cinque Terre day trips all start in Florence. If you're staying in Pisa, the train is the simplest way to go. For a guided day that starts in Pisa, the Cinque Terre tour in Small Group from Pisa on Viator (from $192 · 4.8★ from 129 reviews) is covered under guided tours below.

Optional: from Lucca, Genoa and Milan

  • Lucca: change at Viareggio for La Spezia. Allow around 1h30 to 2h.
  • Genoa: regional and Intercity trains run along the coast to Monterosso and La Spezia. Some regional trains stop at every village, so you can start at the Monterosso end.
  • Milan: Intercity trains reach La Spezia and Monterosso in about 3 hours or more. That's possible, but it makes for a very long day, so stay a night.

In the Cinque Terre: trains, cards and the Via dell'Amore

Village trains

Regional trains between La Spezia and Levanto stop at all five villages, roughly 1 to 2 per hour in winter. Hops take 2 to 10 minutes. Single fares from 2 November use the ordinary Liguria regional tariff, starting at about €2.40 to €2.50 (one guide quotes €2.50 to €3.80 depending on distance).

Cinque Terre Treno MS Card

  • €17.30 adult, 1 day (2 November to 31 December 2026, official Park price list). Child €11.00, over-70 €13.70, 2-day adult €29.00.
  • It includes unlimited regional trains between Levanto and La Spezia, Park services and the Via dell'Amore. It also covers the station toilets in the villages, which otherwise cost about €1.
  • Is it worth it? If you want the Via dell'Amore, yes: you need a card for it anyway. Otherwise, add up your hops. Four or five at about €2.50 to €3.80 each comes close to the card price.

Check before you go: the Park had not published prices from 1 January 2027 when we checked. Some sites say €17.30 runs to 12 March 2027. During orange or red weather alerts the Park suspends card sales.

Via dell'Amore (Riomaggiore to Manarola)

  • You need a Cinque Terre Card plus a booked time slot.
  • Winter hours: 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027, 9:00–18:00, last entry 17:30 (Park website).
  • It's one-way: you enter at Riomaggiore and come out at Manarola. It takes about 30 minutes.

Trail status: read this first

  • A Park notice dated 10 September 2026 says the Corniglia–Vernazza–Monterosso section of the Sentiero Verde Azzurro is "closed and not passable" pending geological checks, with updates to follow.
  • In mid-October, two unofficial sites listed it as open again, but we couldn't find a Park reopening notice. Treat it as closed unless the Park says it has reopened.
  • The coastal Manarola–Corniglia path remains closed. The Manarola–Volastra–Corniglia route (reopened March 2026) and the steep Via Beccara (Riomaggiore–Manarola) are the usual winter alternatives.
  • Outside the Via dell'Amore, trails are free from November to mid-March.

Realistic winter day plans from Florence

Add an hour's sleep if you're coming from Pisa. All four plans have a buffer built in: the next direct train is usually an hour later, so aim to be on the platform 15 minutes early and keep the following train as your backup.

(a) The three-village classic

  1. 07:00Florence SMN to La Spezia

Arrive 09:33. Buy or collect your card at the station.

  2. 10:00Riomaggiore

The harbour and the lanes of Riomaggiore.

  3. 11:00Via dell'Amore to Manarola

Use your booked slot, then lunch in Manarola around 12:30.

  4. 13:45Vernazza or Monterosso

Train to Vernazza, or Monterosso if you want more open restaurants.

  5. 16:30Sunset coffee

Then the train back to La Spezia.

  6. 17:40Direct train to Florence

    Arrive 20:08 (backup: 18:40, arriving 21:08).

(b) The hiker's day

  1. 07:00Florence to La Spezia, then Manarola

Arrive La Spezia 09:33 and Manarola at about 10:00.

  2. 10:15–12:45Manarola–Volastra–Corniglia

A walk up through the vineyard terraces. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours and carry water and snacks, because Volastra has few services in winter.

  3. 13:00Lunch in Corniglia

Or a picnic in Corniglia if things are closed.

  4. 14:30An easy stroll

    Train to Riomaggiore or Vernazza.

  5. 16:15Off the trails

Be off the trails by 16:15 and walk back to the platform before dark.

(c) The nativity evening plan (about 9 December to mid-January)

  1. Late morningTrain from Florence

Arriving La Spezia at about 13:20 to 14:20.

  2. AfternoonRiomaggiore and Vernazza

    Two villages by daylight.

  3. 16:30Arrive in Manarola

The lights usually come on about 15 minutes after sunset (about 17:00) and stay on until about 22:00.

  4. 18:15Train to La Spezia

For the 19:16 weekday direct to Florence, arriving 21:57. One listing shows a later Intercity at 20:23 with a change at Pisa, arriving 22:50. That's unconfirmed, so don't rely on it.

Is it feasible? Yes on weekdays, but tight. On Sundays and holidays the last direct train is the 18:40, which leaves you only about an hour of lights. On 8 December (a Tuesday and a public holiday in 2026) the switch-on is expected around 17:30, the holiday timetable applies and the crowds are huge, so stay overnight. Full details are in our Manarola Christmas nativity 2026 guide.

(d) The rainy-day plan

  • Morning in La Spezia: arcaded streets, cafés and the seafront.
  • ATC bus 11/P from near La Spezia station to Porto Venere. It takes about 30 minutes and runs about every 30 minutes. A single costs €3 if you buy it before boarding and more on board.
  • After lunch, take the train to Monterosso, the village most likely to have open restaurants.

Guided day tours from Florence and Pisa in winter

What's typically included

  • Coach or minivan to La Spezia, or a village car park
  • A guide or tour leader, and train tickets between villages
  • Sometimes a stop in Pisa or Porto Venere on the way back

In winter, boat legs are replaced by the train. Some small-group itineraries also swap Monterosso for Corniglia from mid-November to late March. Tours that are sold on their boat ride are a poor winter choice, because the boats stop running.

Small group vs large coach

If you're staying in Pisa, note that the Florence coach tours' Pisa option is a stop on the way back to Florence, not a pick-up in Pisa. From a Pisa base, the train or the small-group tour above is the better fit.

Tour vs DIY: pros and cons

  • Tour pros: no ticket stress, someone else keeps an eye on strikes and connections, and a guide gives context.
  • Tour cons: a small group costs two to three times as much as the train, the pace is fixed, and there's usually no Via dell'Amore or hiking unless you book it as an option.
  • DIY pros: cheap and flexible, and you can follow the weather.
  • DIY cons: you handle any disruption yourself.

Driving from Florence

  • Take the A11 towards Pisa, then the A12 towards La Spezia. Allow about 1h45 to 2h.
  • Park in La Spezia or Levanto, then take the train. Village roads are narrow, parking is scarce and access is often restricted.
  • ZTL warning: Florence's historic centre is a camera-enforced limited traffic zone, active Monday to Friday 7:30–20:00 and Saturday 7:30–16:00. Each pass through a gate can mean a fine of €83 to €332 under art. 7 of Italy's Highway Code (30% less if paid within 5 days, per Virgilio Motori), plus a rental admin fee. Pick up your car outside the centre. La Spezia also has ZTLs.

Practical tips for a winter day trip

  • Strikes (sciopero): a national rail strike runs from 21:00 on Friday 20 November to 20:00 on Saturday 21 November 2026. Guaranteed regional services run 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00 on weekdays. A general strike is also listed for 4 December 2026. Check the official strike calendar and the Trenitalia app.
  • Weather alerts: check the ARPAL Liguria alerts. On orange or red alert days, trails may close and the Park stops selling cards.
  • What to pack: grippy shoes, a rain shell, layers, a power bank and a headtorch for the nativity evening. Our winter packing checklist has the full list.
  • Food and lunch timing: kitchens usually serve from about 12:30 to 14:30, then close until the evening. Eat on time or rely on focaccia shops. After lunch, try a glass of the local white wine.
  • Toilets: there are paid toilets at the village stations, free with the card. Bars expect you to buy something.
  • Travel insurance: strikes, storms and cancelled tours do happen, so choose cover that includes travel disruption.

Do ferries run to Cinque Terre in winter?

Only the Cinque Terre Trip to Vernazza and Monterosso, which the operator Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti runs every day from 2 November to 8 December 2026. After that there are none until March.

Before you go

Check before you go: Trenitalia changes its timetable on 13 December 2026, strikes are announced at short notice, and the Park can close trails and suspend card sales on alert days. Look up your exact train in the Trenitalia app the day before, and check the Park's trail page on the morning you travel.

Plan your winter day

Do the Cinque Terre in a winter day, with the trains handled

To skip the timetables, the Florence: Cinque Terre Day Trip with Optional Hiking or Pisa takes you from Florence to the villages and back with a guide. Going it alone? Leave by about 7:00 and keep the 17:40 from La Spezia as your train home.
